Excellent BBC documentary on the battle between left and right in the British Labour Party.

Very interesting programme about the transformation of the British Labour party from 1979. What’s fascinating is how left wing they actually were, to the extent of calling for, on live television, at their party conference, “Three cheers for international socialism! Hip-hip?”. The other striking point, at least to me, is how Neil Kinnock’s warm and gregarious personality was regarded as a liability. I can’t help thinking that in Ireland or the US it would be very much a positive thing, and that it was basic snobbery that did in Kinnock at the end. It should also be noted that when Labour ran on its most left wing manifesto ever in 1983, the architect of that direction, Tony Benn, actually lost his seat!
